Do-It-Yourself Instructions: How to install a contact point and what to do when the contact point is loose
Under normal circumstances, the bulbous end of the contact point fits underneath the contact point clip. There will be enough downward tension to keep the contact point firmly seated.
Swivel the contact point clip into position if it has been moved. The clip usually pivots very hard and using the edge of a screw driver will keep you from damaging your fingers.
The contact point is kept in place by a ratchet-like surface between the point and the lever assembly. The contact point should be able to swivel about 180- degrees but it must not do this on its own. There should be enough friction to keep it steady.
If there is up and down wiggle, or the contact point appears to move too freely side to side then you can adjust the tension exerted by the contact point clip which is riveted to the lever assembly. Use your jeweler’s pliers and squeeze lightly. You may have to try again to get it just right.
If you have gone too far, or if you think there is too much pressure to begin with, put the contact point in place and pry it upwards slightly to help open the clip.
Careful: This clip can break and it is no easy job replacing it (it is, in fact, not sold as a spare part). Check that the contact point rests properly in the ratcheted surface of the lever assembly.
If the lever arm no longer moves once the contact point is installed, then you have to find out where the problem lies. Look at the position of the jewel and see if the lever is now too far down in the spiral groove. Refer to the appropriate section in the Last Word Repair Manual.
