Kafer travel dial indicators
(up to 4 inches of travel)

These are sturdy, highly accurate (within one graduation), moderately priced indicators made in Germany with old world craftsmanship. Each indicator has a serial number and the manufacturer provides a certificate of calibration which is, however, not NIST traceable, these gages being manufactured in Europe they are German DIN traceable*. You may request optional NIST certification for $45.

Two features of note: crystals (lens) are easily replaced by the end user without resorting to specialized tools. All size travel indicators (below) feature a very large counter hand which makes for quick and easy reading. You won't have to walk around with a magnifying glass dangling from your neck.

These indicators have plastic bezels and plastic crystals; however, metal bezels and genuine glass crystals are optionally ($45) available.

Many different distributors have had their names put on the Kafer dial indicator. The Kafer dial indicators offered here feature the SPI vanity dial. Both the SPI ordering number and the Kafer model number are shown for reference.

Kafer repairs: By special arrangement with the manufacturer, Long Island Indicator Service is a repair service and importer of spare parts for the Kafer line of dial indicators, thickness gage, and depth gage.

When to use a long range indicator

Use long range travel indicators only if you are actually going to measure large dimensions. If you merely want to have a longer reach, then you should use a contact extension in combination with model Z2/30TA (shown at the top of this page). It will give you 1" of travel but allow you to reach further into your measured piece. Contact extensions are available on page 133.

Specifications of Kafer indicators

  • Stem diameter 3/8" on TA models and 8 mm on T models.
  • Lug back included, flat back #20-764-7 optional ($15).
  • Large concentric revolution counter hand.
  • Standard contact points 4/48 on inch models and M2.5 on metric models.
  • Uniform pressure over full range of travel.

Important hints on how to use the Kafer indicator

The manufacturer supplies the following additional information:

  • The dial indicator is an instrument of high precision and demands careful handling.
  • Blows and shocks may seriously damage the sensitive mechanism and must be avoided.
  • The shaft (spindle) must be kept clean at all times. Do not lubricate the shaft.
  • Please pay attention to the position of the hands which are initially set back by a quarter of a turn. Indicators with one or two hands are equally adjusted so as to begin measuring exactly at (the) Zero point.
  • When holding the indicator by its shaft housing (spindle) be sure clamping screw is only moderately tightened. An over-tightened clamp could jam the shaft.
  • The dial can be adjusted to each desired point by turning the knurled bezel.
  • For repair of Kafer indicators contact your local repair center (Long Island Indicator Service).
  • Complete parts inventory is maintained [by Long Island Indicator Service*].

*we have to admit that we don't have every part in stock for every model. But we do carry those parts commonly used for repair purposes. Parts not in stock can be available in 4-5 weeks.

Dial indicator calibration

Ideally you would calibrate your long range dial indicator before every use. The simplest way is to put the indicator in a stand, on a granite surface, and check the indicator's accuracy using a series of gage blocks. For complete details, please refer to page 7.

* By international agreement, German DIN standards are fully acceptable in lieu of NIST standards.
