Kafer dial thickness gage
with 16" deep throat measurement capability
(these gages will no longer be available from us after December 2018)

At ~16" these thickness gages have the largest throat depth we can offer. The inch or metric reading gage is designed for measurement of relatively soft materials such as felt, foam, elastics, leather, plastics and other compressible fabrics. (For harder substances see models at bottom of this page.) Shown with optional weights to increase measuring force.

The extra large 30 mm diameter flat anvils allow a precise measurement to be taken without unduly compressing the material. If, for some reason you prefer a smaller anvil, this will have to be specified at the time of ordering.

There is no extra charge for different sized anvils.

The anvils are closed when at rest. Depressing the lever causes the anvil to rise, which allows you to insert the material to be measured. The anvil closes under its own weight which is constant from one measuring sample to the next. The measuring force is 1.2 N but can be customized. You will have to request a custom measuring force when the order is placed. Additional measuring force can be added with weights placed above the indicator. These weights as shown in the photo above are optional.

A word of caution: when operating the lever, make sure you do not rest your hand on the gage frame. Even though the frame is made of aluminum, a slight amount of pressure on the frame can cause reading errors of several thousandths. Try it and you will see.

Special Metric Dial thickness gage for foam measurement

Foam measurement requires minimum force to reduce compression. It also works best if the anvils are oversized. We offer this special version of model K400 with 2" diameter anvils and the absolute minimum force possible.

  • Model K400 special type F
  • Reading 0,1 mm
  • Range 30 mm
  • Range per revolution 10 mm
  • Bezel diameter 58 mm
  • Depth of jaw 400 mm
  • Feeler diameter 50.4 mm (2 inches)
  • Measuring force reduced to minimum possible
  • Accuracy ≤ 40 µm
  • Price: $545.00 order now
  • Delivery: 3-4 weeks

Inch dial thickness gage for hard materials

Hard or solid materials such as glass or metal require rounded, spherical anvils of 5 mm diameter for the best readings.

Would you rather have something smaller?

Models with 8" or 12" throat depths, both inch and metric, are shown on page 168. Other sizes can be found on page 96.

Digital Models or Higher Resolution

These deep throat thickness gages are available only in mechanical versions. The aluminum frame, because of its size, is not sufficiently stable for higher resolution or for digital indicators.

Anvil types

Anvils, also known as contact points (see the photo), are not routinely interchangeable and you should specify which type you need when purchasing the gage. It will, however, be possible to change these from one type to another although it requires a bit of skill to align them parallel to each other, usually effected with three adjustment screws located underneath the lower anvil.

Anvils1

These 5 standard anvil types are available on all Kafer dial and digital thickness gages. They are designated by the alphabetic letters shown above. Anvils larger than 30 mm in diameter are also available by special order. The descriptions below are only application suggestions.

  • Type A: 30 mm diameter flat for compressible foams, fabrics, etc.
  • Type B: 20 mm diameter flat intermediate density and non-flat measurement
  • Type C: 10 mm diameter flat for common use on paper or objects that are round or cylindrical.
  • Type D: 10 mm radius convex anvil for hard surfaces, or delicate wood surfaces
  • Type E: 1/8" radius for metal, glass, etc.
  • Type F: 2" diameter flat for special applications. This is a custom made point by request only.
  • Type G: according to your instructions we can mix and match any of these. You might request a 20 mm flat bottom and 10 mm radius top, for example.
